Web service is
a fast moving research field with a profound impact to many critical
research areas, ranging from software to communication, from server
to mobile endpoints. It emerges as a disruptive technology to various
enterprises to deliver services, computing, communication and
their customers and partners. This talk intends to capture some recent
of Web services and new Web services applications in
computing, communication, message centric SOAP engine design, and
services computing endpoints.
addition to present the technical perspectives and extension potentials
these new developments, I would like to fill the gap between academic
and industry applications through real examples and use cases, with a
demonstrate how these technical advances of Web services are applied to
products and applications, Standards, servers, clients, and new
paradigms in software
design and testing.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Wu Chou (firstname.lastname@example.org) is an IEEE Fellow. He received his M.S.
degree in mathematics in 1986, M.S. degree in electrical engineering in
1987, M.S. degree in statistics in 1988, and Ph.D. degree in electrical
engineering in 1990, all from Stanford University, California,
respectively. He joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1990. Currently, he
is Director, Avaya Labs Fellow at Avaya Labs Research, Avaya Inc. He
and his group explore advanced technologies and applications in Web
services, communication, software-as-a-service (SaaS), and services
He is a member of IEEE Computer Society, Signal Processing Society, and
Communication Society. He served at various technical committees,
industry standards bodies, and transaction/journal editorial boards. He
contributed to many industry standards on web services, speech and
language processing, multimodal interaction, computer supported
telecommunication applications, and unified communication services.
He has been granted over 20 US and international patents, authored or
co-authored more than 100 journal and conference paper publications,
including three book chapters, and one edited book. He received Bell
Laboratories President’s Gold Award in 1997 and Avaya
Leadership Award in 2005.
Keynote 2: Net-Enabled Applications for Commercial Aviation
Susan X. Ying
Director of the Networked Systems Technology organization, Boeing
Boeing is an aerospace company, and both airplanes and aviation services are our core businesses. Founded in 1916, Boeing has had a long relationship with China. In fact, the first engineer hired by the company, Wong Tsoo, was a Chinese national. Boeing is projected to sell more airplanes to China than other countries outside of United States in the next 20 years.
Boeing's central research organization supports the enterprise by developing technology in support of the company's current and future products, streamlining operations, and improving tools and processes. In the past few years, we have been collaborating with Chinese universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hong Kong to develop technologies for net-enabled applications for commercial aviation. We expect this effort will continue in the years to come.
Boeing provides a long list of services to airlines in streamlining their operations. Recent models of Boeing aircraft such as the Next-Generation 737 and 787 Dreamliner will be net-enabled in the air and on the ground. We are just beginning to explore the opportunities net-enabling the fleet can bring to the end customers in terms of safety, cost, and passenger experience. Airplanes are mobile nodes in an IP world, offering tremendous opportunities and challenges for researchers. In this speech, we will explore how net-enabling and Web services can help us to exploit the opportunities and overcome the challenges.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Susan X. Ying is the Director of The Boeing Company's Networked Systems Technology organization, a team that comprises more than 300 world-renowned scientists and engineers who provide innovative solutions to address a number of unique Boeing requirements, including multi-disciplinary design optimization, network-centric operations, information management and transformation, digital communication and networking technologies, distributed collaborative design, advanced manufacturing, and after-delivery support and service challenges.
Prior to her current position, Ying's roles at Boeing included Director of Engineering and Information Technology, Enabling Technology Program Manager, Executive Program Integrator for Phantom Works, two-year rotation in the Boeing Executive Development Program, and leadership positions in the C-17 Extended Range Program, Systems Engineering and Integration, Aerodynamics, and Flight Performance for Advanced Transport Technologies. Demonstrating success both at individual and team levels, she has been the recipient of many honors, including the Boeing C-17 Silver Eagles Award, Amelia Earhart Society Award, Engineer of the Month Award, and NASA Group Achievement Award. Before joining Boeing, Ying taught at Stanford University, Iowa State University, and Florida State University; directed research in the DOE Supercomputer Computations Research Lab and NASA Ames Research Center; and earned a spot as a NASA Astronaut Candidate finalist.
Dr. Ying is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and currently serves on the AIAA Board of Directors as Director-International. She is active in other aerospace societies, including the International Council of Aerospace Science, Women in Aviation, and Amelia Earhart Society. She has chaired several international committees and conferences, including the only joint AIAA-China Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference in Xian, China. She also represented U.S. university professors as the Aerospace Education Ambassador to Russia in 1993. Ying is currently Boeing's Executive Focal for Stanford University.
As an avid aviatrix, Ying holds a commercial pilot license and is a FAA-Certified Flight Instructor. She enjoys coaching and instructing students from local communities. Ying received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University and her B.S. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University. As a true believer in life-long learning, she has also taken executive education courses from the Kellogg School of Business Administration, Wharton Business School, and Brookings Institute in Brussels.
Keynote 3: Mobile Services Business and Technology Trends
IBM Fellow and Global Research Electronics Executive
Thanks to the advent of smart devices and the emergence of 3G/4G wireless technologies, services over mobile phones are becoming in many respects similar to those available over the PC based internet. Indeed mobile web-based services, such as search, maps, presence, messaging, emails, productivity, social networking, and entertainment are becoming available in high-end phones from several device manufacturers. Mobile computing, however, promises richer applications and services based on location and context. Web technologies are being adapted and extended to support emerging mobile internet services. However, location based mobile services present new significant challenges in terms of implementation and management complexity. In this presentation we will discuss the business trends of mobile services. Through a discussion of current projects at IBM Research, we will also present examples of the technology trends supporting scalable location based services.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Cesar Gonzales is an IBM Fellow and the research electronics industry executive, responsible for all interactions between IBM's worldwide research labs and our electronics industry executives and clients. He is an expert in image and video processing and compression; his experience spans the development of algorithms, chip and system architectures, and multimedia applications. He is a co-inventor of various patented still-frame and motion video compression techniques that IBM contributed to the JPEG and MPEG international standards and the DVD patent pool.
Cesar has received multiple external and internal awards, including a corporate-level award for his leadership in developing IBM's MPEG-based encoders and system-on-a-chip set top box products. In June of 1998, Cesar was named an IBM Fellow. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has served as editor of IEEE Transactions for Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and is currently on the editorial board of ACM's Computers in Entertainment. He also served as the US head of delegation to the ISO MPEG standards and has received an Outstanding Technical Achievement awards from the Hispanic Engineers Technical Achievements Awards conference.
Keynote Panel: Services Computing: A New Thinking Style of Education and Engineering

Services Computing has become a foundational discipline of modernizing services and software industry. Services Computing Curriculum Initiative (SCCI) is a community-driven professional activity which is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing (TC-SVC). This session will present the latest advancements of SCCI in terms of newly formalized knowledge areas, case studies, and best practices of creating and delivering Services Computing courses. Several adoption approaches will be introduced based on co-design and reuse principles for various degree programs.
This panel will also share with you some long-term visions and latest lessons learnt from experienced professors and practitioners in the community.
About the Speaker:
As a Research Staff Member and Program Manager of Application Architectures and Realization at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Dr. Liang-Jie (LJ) Zhang has made significant original contributions to Services Computing innovations and interactive media systems. He is the founding chair of IBM Research's Services Computing Professional Interest Community. He is the worldwide leader of IBM's SOMA Modeling Environment (SOMA-ME), which is the model-driven SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) solution design platform for IBM. He is also the worldwide co-leader of IBM's SOA Solution Stack (a.k.a. SOA Reference Architecture: Solution View) project. His new book Services Computing has been published by Springer. He has received 2 IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, 10 IBM Plateau Invention Achievement Awards, an Outstanding Achievement Award by the World Academy of Sciences, and an Innovation Leadership Award from Chinese Institute of Electronics. Dr. Zhang has 36 granted patents and 20 pending patent applications. As the lead inventor, he holds federated Web services discovery and dynamic services composition patents. He is the chair of IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing. He is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing.
